HP inks and papers

With HP's amazing true-to-life photo printing, life takes on a whole new dimension. Feel the warm glow of a colourful sunset through the seamless blend of hues across the horizon. Enjoy the delicate skintones of your newborn with the virtually grain-free printing. With HP, perfection is finally here.

what is HP photoREt 4 colour layering technology?

HP PhotoREt 4 colour layering is HP's next generation photo Resolution Enhancement technology.
It uses 6-ink colour printing to deliver impressive colour accuracy and precise image detail for true-to-life photo quality.

what do you need to enjoy HP photoREt 4 colour layering technology?

By using a combination of HP 58 Photo Inkjet Print Cartridge and HP 57 Tri-colour Inkjet Print Cartridge, consumers can enjoy the benefits of HP PhotoREt 4 colour layering technology.

what are the advantages?

HP PhotoREt 4 colour layering technology delivers:
virtually grain-free images for realistic true-to-life photo quality
a broader range of colours, including an extensive range of lighter tones for natural looking skin tones and truer, more accurate colour reproduction
brighter, more vibrant colours and deep, rich glossy blacks for brilliant photo quality
specially formulated fade-resistant inks combine with new and improved HP colourfast photo paper to deliver longer-lasting photos
high speed photo printing without compromising on photo-quality

virtually grain-free printing
Thanks to HP 6-ink colour printing technology, printouts are virtually free from any visible grain. By utilising light cyan, light magenta inks, lighter colours can be printed directly without resorting to colour creation through half-toning, thereby removing visible grain from light sections of every printout.

wider colour range
Building on the foundation of HP's existing colour layering technology, HP PhotoREt 4 delivers a significantly broader range of colours from natural, lifelike skin tones to bright, vibrant shades. With their extensive colour range, HP PhotoREt 4 printers produce smoother colour transitions and sharper image clarity for true photo quality.

340 times more directly printable colours
HP PhotoREt 4's multi-drop colour layering technology generates up to 289 levels of colour intensity. This allows the creation of more than 1.2 million directly printable colours for dramatic improvements in photo resolution enhancement. That's 340 times more directly printable colours than what was achieved with HP PhotoREt 3. Coupled with the optimal use of the printer's broad colour gamut HP PhotoREt 4 printers produce a vast range of colour shades, from the palest tones of a winter sky to the bright, vibrant shades of a tropical sea.

excellent fade resistance
The new HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge used in PhotoREt 4 printers contains new specially formulated photo inks that work with HP Colourfast Photo Papers to provide extended fade resistance for long lasting digital prints.

high speed photo printing
As HP PhotoREt 4 colour layering technology improves on the printout's quality through precise layering of dots and through the intelligent use of the 6-ink system, excellent quality is achieved without increasing the dpi used during printing. This has the advantage of lower system processing loads, which in turn speeds up the entire printing process.

how does it work?

HP PhotoREt 4 printers use inks of different intensities (referred to as dye load — the more dye there is, the stronger the colour). This allows each ink tank to produce significantly more levels of colour intensity or shades for every dot. Using HP's unique colour layering technology to strategically layer multiple colour shades, HP PhotoREt 4 printers produce more than 340 times the number of primary colours produced by PhotoREt 3 printers - in excess of 1.2 million colours.

HP colour layering technology from PhotoREt 4 precisely controls the amount of ink applied to each print position to produce smoother gradations between tones for virtually grain-free images. By layering up to 32 ultra small (4-5 picolitre) drops within a single dot, PhotoREt 4 printers require a smaller amount of data than printers needing to process higher dpi, so printing is faster.

HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge — the cornerstone of HP photoREt 4 technology

The HP 58 photo cartridge featured with HP PhotoREt 4 printers provides 6-ink colour printing when used in combination with the HP 57 tri-colour print cartridge.

The HP 58 photo cartridge contains specially formulated light dye-load inks in light cyan and light magenta, and a specially formulated dye-based black ink. The photo cartridge places 5 picolitre drops at 18 kHz.

The HP 57 tri-colour cartridge contains full dye-load inks in cyan, magenta and yellow, specifically developed to provide a rich colour gamut. The HP 57 tri-colour cartridge places small (4 or 5 picolitre) drops at 21 or 18 kHz. The ability to print with six inks allows HP PhotoREt 4 printers to deliver exceptional photo quality. The light cyan and light magenta inks in the HP 58 photo cartridge enable PhotoREt 4 printers to produce an extensive colour range. The light dye-load photo inks produce less visible, subtle colour drops, which significantly reduce the appearance of grain in images. The small size of the ink drops also helps eliminate grain. This enables PhotoREt 4 printers to deliver finer detail and enhanced image quality.

The inks in the HP 58 photo cartridge are designed to provide optimal results when printing on HP photo papers and are specifically formulated to resist fading. When used in combination with HP's Colourfast Photo Paper, the photo inks provide extended fade resistance - more than three times that of the previous generation ink and photo media combination.
